Anti Depression Medication Defined
Depression is a terrible illness that can be devastating. Millions of Americans suffer from this disorder and are completely unaware of the fact that they have the disease. Unlike grief, which comes on rapidly, this problem can come on slowly, insidiously manifesting itself, before the person can actually realize they are in a full-blown depression. Once the patient is diagnosed with it, anti depression medication may be prescribed. Most of this type of medication may take several weeks to take effect, so in order to fill that gap, the doctor may prescribe a temporary medication to ease the symptoms of the illness immediately.
Most medications target certain neurotransmitters that are actively traveling through the neuron. Most of the medications are designed to keep neurotransmitters such as serotonin at bay, inside the synapse. The synapse is the point where transmission of serotonin takes place. It is believed that the longer serotonin (the feel good transmitter) can stay in the synapse, the longer it can increase it’s effects. This is an example of just one among many types of anti depression medications that really work, and are used by the majority of physicians to help ease the symptoms of the depressed, and eventually extinguish the disorder.
