Depression Medicine
An antidepressant is a medicine that helps people who are feeling sad or upset. Antidepressants work by increasing the concentration of neurotransmitters to the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals needed in the brain for normal functioning of the brain.
Drugs used for treating depression are taken each day. This medicine can be effective after one month of use. The administration of antidepressant drugs is done by trying out different dosage in order to find the dosage that proves effective to you. The use of antidepressants can extend to one year from the time of administration of dosage. The use of the anti-depressants can be extended further for more than one year if need arises. A doctor will need to determine the need to extend use of depression medicine.
Depression medication is classified according to the chemicals different products stimulate in the brain. A common group of antidepressants is called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s). This class of medicine is the first to be administered to a patient who experiences depression for the first time. The use of SSRI’s is preferred because they have fewer side effects. The side effects associated with use of SSRI’s include nervousness, sexual problems, and dry mouth among others.
