Depression Pills – The History

Depression PillsIf you suffer from depression, you are not alone.  Millions of people suffer from this disorder, and fortunately there is help.  Decades ago when researchers were investigating exactly what types of effects the disease had at the level of the neuron, they noticed something intriguing.  They discovered that certain neurotransmitters, like serotonin, when depleted from the animals brains, had devastating behavioral results.  The animals became distraught to the point of not eating, and becoming almost immobile.

The starvation of these transmitters in the lab animal brains gave the researchers insight on how to develop depression pills in humans.  They discovered that the longer certain natural chemicals stayed in the nervous system, the more time these chemicals had to do their job effectively, so depression meds were developed to encourage this activity in the brain.  Serotonin and dopamine, are two of the neurotransmitters that the pills tend to work on, they keep the two transmitters in a prolonged synaptic state in order to increase elevated brain activity, which ultimately yields an elevated mood in the person who is suffering from depression.  These pills are some of the most popular used medications  to treat the symptoms today, and are available through prescription.
